The Empty Chair
A solemn, meaningful reflection exercise where participants speak to future generations of members. It strengthens the emotional link to the organization’s legacy and enduring responsibility.
Works best at the near the end of a workshop or retreat, before a formal closing ceremony, or after heavy discussions about mission, vision, or culture.
Instructions:
Set up a single empty chair at the center of a circle.
Explain: "This chair represents future members of your organization, 10, 50, 100 years from now."
Invite participants to speak a short message, hope, or commitment to the future, passing a token.
Silence is respected if someone chooses not to speak.
Optionally collect messages into a "Century Commitment Book."
Processing Suggestions:
Ask: "What responsibility do we carry for those who will come after us?"
Reflect: How does thinking about future generations shape the way we act today?
