Mentor Matching

There are three methods in the mentor matching process – Self-Matching, Administrator Matching and Hybrid Matching. Here’s how each work –

SELF MATCHING

Those in search of a mentor usually know what they are looking for, so sometimes it’s best to let them choose their mentor. When a mentee chooses their mentor, the relationship can be longer-lasting and more fruitful.

There is usually a more successful match with this method, and it’s less work for administration as it does not require their time. However, mentees don’t always initiate the searching process. There’s also less control of matching for those administering the process, and the match may also not align with the program or organizational objectives.

ADMINISTRATOR MATCHING

If you need control over mentor-matching decisions, this approach is a practical option.  With this method, the administrator has full control over the matching process, and mentees aren’t required to request or respond to matches.

However, it does takes hours to days to match every mentee. Also, chosen mentoring relationships may not be the best match. As such, if timing is critical, this may not be the best approach. Use this method if a higher number of matches is a priority, and you have the time to put into the mentor matching process. 

HYBRID MATCHING

Finally, the blend of self- and administrator matching is another option. With this approach, the administrator retains full control over the matching process, and the mentee can be presented options to choose from to determine their preferred mentor.

The challenge here is that this method is often the longest matching process. Firstly, it’s because mentees don’t always request for a mentor and, second, mentors don’t always accept or decline requests for mentorship.

If your goal is for your employees to connect to a mentor personally, self-matching is a great approach. If you want full control, especially if you are just starting out with your mentoring program, administrator matching is the better option. Hybrid matching is best if timing isn’t critical and harmonious mentoring relationships your priority.
